I grew up in Montagu, graduated at the University of Stellenbosch with a PhD in Agriculture and followed a career as an agricultural researcher in Stellenbosch. In 1994 I became director of one of the Agricultural Research’s research institutes at Roodeplaat near Pretoria.
In 2002, after retirement, I took a knifemaking course with André Thorburn. Since then I make knives as a hobby and focus mainly on hunting knives and folders. For hunting knives I use mostly Sandvik 12C27 and N690 steel blades and local hardwood and animal materials as handles. For folders I use mostly RWL34 steel for blades and titanium for liners and bolsters.
In 2008 I became a member of the Cape Knifemakers Guild. From time to time I present knifemaking courses for beginners on a one-to-one basis.
